Write Mode (Story View)

Write mode, also called Story View, is GenPy's visual story editor. Instead of looking at raw script, you see your story as draggable cards that are easy to read, move, and revise.

What Write mode is for

Write mode helps you focus on the flow of a scene without needing to think about every line of script syntax. It is ideal for drafting, revising, and reorganizing story content in a more visual way.

Node types you will see

  • Dialogue: character speech with clear, color-coded speaker identification
  • Narration: story text without a speaking character
  • Choice Menu: branching points with player options
  • Scene Change: instructions for backgrounds, sprites, and show or hide actions
  • Jump: movement to another label or story section

Editing features

  • Drag cards to reorder lines and scenes
  • Click a card to edit its content inline
  • Use character color coding to spot speakers at a glance
  • Preview common text tags such as {w}, {cps}, {color}, and {size}
  • Open the right-click menu for quick actions like copy, delete, or convert type
  • View thumbnail previews on scene-related cards for faster visual checking
  • Convert node types when a line needs to change from dialogue to narration, narration to menu, and more

INFO

Write mode and Code mode edit the same script. If you change something in one view, the other view updates right away.

When to use Write mode

Write mode is especially useful when you want to:

  • stay focused on storytelling instead of script formatting
  • rearrange moments in a scene by dragging cards
  • review pacing, branching, and readability at a glance
  • collaborate with writers or team members who prefer a visual editor

A smoother way to revise scenes

Because each line appears as a separate card, it is easy to spot repeated beats, long stretches of narration, or awkward scene order. You can quickly move, rewrite, or convert nodes until the scene reads the way you want.

Tips for working faster

  • Use Write mode for early drafting and structural revisions
  • Switch to Code mode when you need detailed control over advanced logic
  • Right-click cards to discover useful actions without breaking your writing flow
  • Pair Write mode with the AI assistant to generate options, rewrite dialogue, or expand a scene

TIP

If you are blocking out a chapter, start in Write mode to shape the flow, then refine the final script in Code mode.
