Getting Started
Getting your first project running in GenPy only takes a few minutes. You can begin with a blank idea, a finished draft, or an existing Ren'Py project.

Start a Project
GenPy gives you three easy ways to begin. Choose the option that matches where you are in the creative process.
1. Novel to Script
- Paste in novel text, scene drafts, or long-form writing
- GenPy turns that material into a Ren'Py-ready project structure
2. New Blank Project
- Enter your project name and author name
- Start from a clean workspace and build everything your way
3. Import Existing Project
- Upload a
.zipfile of an existing Ren'Py project - Imports currently support files up to 80MB per upload
TIP
If this is your first time using GenPy, try the demo project or start with a small blank project so you can learn the workspace without pressure.
What You See Inside a Project
Once you enter a project, most of your time will be spent in the main workspace. The layout is designed to keep writing, planning, previewing, and project management close at hand.
- Left sidebar — switch between Home, Sketch, Agent, Write, Code, Characters, Assets, Design, Tools, and Publish
- Left slide-in panels — open your file tree, scenes, characters, and outline
- Right slide-in panels — open the AI assistant and workspace settings
A Simple First Workflow
- Import an existing project or create a new one
- Open Write mode to edit scenes visually
- Use VN Player to preview dialogue, choices, and scene flow
- Go to Publish when you are ready to validate and export
INFO
VN Player is great for quick in-editor checks while you work. If you use the desktop app, you can also do a fuller runtime preview on your local machine.
Beginner Tips
- Start in Write mode if you are new to Ren'Py tools
- Use the AI assistant when you need help brainstorming, rewriting, or understanding your project
- Try a demo project first to see how scenes, files, and assets fit together
- Export regularly so you always have a backup copy of your project
